LONE WORKER SAFETY SOLUTIONS
FOR UTILITY WORKERS

In many cases, utility workers who work alone and outside of usual business hours, they often work in environments where it may be difficult to call for help. This includes tight, confined spaces or 40 feet up on an electrical pole. In these circumstances, the worker is often alone and vulnerable. They also often work with electrical equipment and face the increased risk of electrocution and debilitating burns and shocks – serious injury can also result if the worker falls or collapses from electrical contact.

This is an industry with many potential hazards. Workers and equipment are transported to and from sites, which are often located in remote areas. Workers are often required to enter confined spaces such as petroleum and storage tanks, mud pits, reserve pits and other excavated areas. Safety hazards associated with confined space include ignition of flammable vapours or gases.  And falls can be the result of workers being required to access platforms located high above ground.

Workers in the water sector may be required to supervise wastewater plants, monitor meters, or check water quality at remote pumping stations or reservoirs. If the worker is alone, these tasks have inevitable risks: high voltage materials, hazardous or contaminated water, poisonous chemicals, and toxic gases. Working alone in conditions where some or all these risks are present can be extremely dangerous.
